Our Operations

Our mica products

Mica is a group of hydrous aluminum silicate minerals known for their unique layered structure, which allows them to cleave into thin sheets. The two main types found in Madagascar are phlogopite, which currently accounts for more than 90% of the mica produced and exported in Madagascar, and muscovite.

Phlogopite Mica

Produced mainly in southern Madagascar. Ranging in color from golden brown to amber with dark and light shades. Phlogopite can withstand severe thermal conditions up to 1000 °C at peak temperatures without disintegrating. It also withstands repeated thermal shocks better than muscovite.

Muscovite Mica

In Madagascar, it is found in mines in the central and eastern regions. It is colorless and transparent material. Muscovite sheets are used as electrical insulators and scraps are used for its reflective properties in paints and cosmetics.

QUALITY CONTROL

Each batch of raw material is classified and processed in accordance with the customer’s technical specifications as defined in the contract. These specifications, divided into five main categories, are verified from the moment the raw mica is received and throughout the processing.
Quality controllers periodically train the sorters to ensure that these rules are followed and regular inspections of our equipment are conducted to ensure that materials are produced in accordance with these specifications.
Each product type, is marked, stored separately in our warehouses, and tracked in our IT system to ensure that the correct product is shipped to the correct customer.

Fire Proof

Each batch is tested under controlled heat exposure to validate thermal resistance and determine its classification. At RIMCO, we offer three grades of heat resistance: from low-temperature resistance, medium-temperature resistance, and high-temperature resistance with a temperature range of over 850°C.

Thickness

During the sorting process thickness is adjusted through the customer requirements. The process is optimized to minimize waste.

Size Classification

Mica is screened and sorted by size mechanically or by hand to secure uniformity for downstream processing.

Impurity Check

Visual and manual sorting removes foreign materials, such as soil and non-mica minerals (rocks, feldspar, quartz, etc.), that could damage or compromise the quality of the finished products made from our mica.

Moisture Check

Moist mica accumulates more impurities and may lose weight during transport to the customer. If the product is moist from the mine, it is dried before sorting, and the moisture content is checked before packaging.

ACTIVITY LOCATION

Rimco sources mica from 30 artisanal and small scale mining communities across four key regions of Madagascar. Depending on its location, materials are transported to one of our two processing centers located in Antsirabe in Vakinankaratra region or in Amboasary-Atsimo in the Anosy Region to be processed. For Mica Craft Implementation, we selected 8 mines as pilot to integrate our Craft System and where we applied for AMEA (Autorisation Minière d’Exploitation Artisanale) as licence to formalize it.

SUPPLY CHAIN MAPPING

At RIMCO, we focus on our core expertise: mica production and processing. This specialization ensures our products meet the highest quality and compliance standards. We rely on two key supply chain actors—collectors and transporters—to manage the organization and rapid development of our sourcing network, ensuring a seamless flow from the mines to our sorting facilities and the export port.

Through this supply chain mapping, which connects mining communities to international brands, we aim to promote transparency among our downstream partners and implement due diligence by supporting each upstream actor on identifying gaps between baseline practices and standards, and conduct risk assessments to bridge them.
